Fun in Lodi

There are many great wine regions in California. For many Napa and Sonoma are great places to start, if for no other reason, there are so many familiar and commonly available wines to be experienced from there. But, over the years Napa, in particular, has changed, and now we prefer the roads less traveled (and a little less costly, too). Lodi doesn't have all the high end amenities and fancy dining of a trip to Napa, but it does offer quite a few wineries, and an enjoyable wine travel experience.

We started out at the big one in town, Mondavi Woodbridge. Woodbridge is known for making decent quality wine at a reasonable price. They aren't a high end winery, but they make a consistent and drinkable wine, and it is an impressive tour, just to see the size and scope of the operation. After you tour the winery you also get a complimentary tasting, and you can try some things that you cannot get in your local Krogers. We brought back a nice bottle of Woodbridge Tempranillo.

Here are a few pictures of the tour...

Tools of the trade

When I'm planning a trip, one of the most useful web sites is http://www.wineweb.com/. This single web site has the most complete information on local wineries in a given region. You can click on the US, then click on a state to see the wineries in that state. You can then see all the wineries in a list or in a map view that you can scroll and zoom in and/or out. This is really useful when you just want to get an idea what is in a given area. Beware though!! Not all the information is 100% up to date, and there are some bad links. But, in general it is the most complete listing I've found.

Welcome to my wine blog

Hi. My name is Ed Woods. I work in the IT field, and I've been traveling all around the world for years as part of my profession. Among the things I like to do in my spare time is drink wine. In fact, that has become the family hobby. My wife Teresa and I like to travel about and sample fine wine from all around the world. This blog will describe some of our experiences. Some in wine country you may be familiar with, and some you may never have heard of before. Cheers!!
